Choosing a projector

Projector Weight

Projectors are either intended to be used as portable tools or to be installed in a fixed location. The majority of portable machines weigh approximately 2kg and are not much bigger than the average lap top computer. Larger, heavier projectors are specifically designed for installing in fixed positions.

Projector Brightness

ANSI lumens is the measure of brightness of a projector. A benchmark is between 1000 and 1500 lumens. Some installation models have the capacity to produce in the excess of 2000 lumens. If the requirement is for a portable machine, then the recommendation would be that the machine projects 800 lumens minimum. Machines with greater lumen projection can be used in a wider range of different environments.

Projector Resolution

This relates to the number of pixels, which make up the image from the PC. Most standard desktop systems run on either SVGA (800 x 600) or XGA (1024 x 768). The majority of laptops operate at XGA.

To gain optimum visual quality, it is essential that the projector and computer have compatible resolutions.

Lamp Type

The special type of lamps used by projectors have varying lengths of useful life. These change model to model and can range anywhere between 750 and 6000 hours (depending on your projector model). They typically do not burn out suddenly, but gradually grow dimmer indicating that a replacement is required.
